__I. Basic Information__

Socionics is a theory of interpersonal interaction based on patterns of information selection and processing. Socionics has 16 types and 16 kinds of intertype relations. Furthermore, it divides information itself into 8 varieties.

Socionics is based on Carl Jung's work on Psychological Types, Freud's theory of the conscious and subconscious mind, and Antoni Kępiński's theory of information metabolism. The theory was developed in the 1970s and 80s mainly by the Lithuanian researcher Ausra Augusta (Aušra Augustinavičiūtė), a financier and teacher of political economics. The name socionics is derived from the word "society", since Augusta believed that each personality type has a distinct purpose in society, which can be described and explained by socionics.

You want to consider Model A/Elements > Quadra > Reinins > Intertype Relations when typing a subject. There should be that form of absolute priority when you are typing a subject (I.E. someone can fit all Beta descriptions but if the elements do not match up, they are simply not a Beta type). You want to know certain aspects of their raison d'être, as well as some background on their general political views on things. For instance, it's rare to find a Gamma Alt-Righter/ANTIFA or a Beta centrist (not absolutely indicative either). You do not need to look at every aspect of their life, but you need to go beyond the surface level to have a better understanding of the individual.

This is (what's supposed to be) a comprehensive beginner's guide to basic Socionics theory. If you're new to Socionics or need a reminder of the basics, I hope this can help you. It's mostly taken from Wikisocion, Psychology wiki and sociotype.com but shorter. For those who know a lot about Socionics it won't help much probably but I'll be glad to receive some feedback. Criticism is welcome. Do not take it as a final word and I would still recommend doing your own research. This was originally just a school project so it's far from perfect and I definitely plan on updating it in the future.

Model A

Model A describes how a person processes information through the use of eight information elements in eight different functions.

Model A is one of the central foundations of socionics. Each function serves a different purpose and contains one information element. To put it in another way, Model A can be thought of as a synthesis of functions and information elements. Socionics uses Model A to sort people into 16 different types, which is also called sociotypes.

Each sociotype has a unique placement of information elements, each placed at a different function. The placement of the functions itself is fixed between sociotypes.

Each function of Model A has a number of important characteristics including valued/unvalued, strong/weak, mental/vital, and accepting/producing. These can be thought of as dichotomies.

The functions can be sorted into different blocks, which are a way to sort a person’s cognitive process in an even more abstract way.

The blocks in Model A are all interconnected to each other, meaning the placement of one information element affects other functions as well. The blocks themselves are the following: Ego, Super Ego, Super Id and Id.

Because the Ego block is both strong and valued, it essentially controls the person's information metabolism, direction of thought, etc. The Ego block sets the goals and direction, and then subconsciously relies on the Id block to provide necessary background information and data that the ego block will use in decision-making. Any conflicts between the Ego block and the Super-ego block generally result in the Ego block winning and the Super-ego block being relegated to a support role or sometimes completely ignored. Because the person is weak in the Super-id block but nevertheless values those information elements in the block, he seeks external support and input from others who value those information elements and are strong in them.

The Information Elements

In the previous section we’ve discussed Model A and it’s composition. This section is going to delve deeper into the information elements we briefly touched on earlier. For starters, there are 8 different information elements (which from now on we will refer to as IM). Each IM is essentially an abstraction of how we deal with the world from a cognitive standpoint. The IM themselves can be divided into 2 types of groups, those being introverted (internal, as in inner world) vs. extroverted (external, referring to the outside world), and rational vs irrational.

The introverted vs extroverted dichotomy determines whether the IM is dealing with the outside world of actions or the person’s own inner world.

The rational vs irrational dichotomy determines whether the IM is either perceiving, meaning it gets information from the outside/inside world, or judging, meaning it judges the information it gets to make decisions, opinions and even moral judgments.

Model A works in a way that so that that the leading function which is your first function and placed in the Ego block will always be rational or irrational, introverted, or extroverted, and the creating function, which is your second function and also in the Ego block, be the opposite then the leading function on those dichotomies. This follows to the rest of the blocks, see table 1-1.

The IM themselves are the following: Ti, Fi, Si, Ni, Te, Fe, Se and Ne and we will now discuss each one individually. Again, keep in mind those are broad abstractions, not concrete rules.

Table 1-1. This table examines the stack of EIE (ENFj). The letter I refers to introversion while the letter E to extraversion. The letter R refers to rational and the letters IR refers to irrational. The number is an arbitrary number since there are 2 possible versions for each IM combination, for example Fi and Ti are both rational and introverted, so the number indicates which is which. The pattern showing the table is true for all sociotypes. For example, it will always be true that if your leading IM is introverted, your demonstrative IM will always be introverted as well.

Ti (Introverted Logic) is an introverted rational IM. Ti is mainly concerned with the ability to recognize logical consistency, understand, and apply logical systems and seeing logical connections between things. It is also concerned with subjective truths. Those who lead with Ti as their dominant function will question beliefs that are normally taken for granted. They tend to make decisions based on their past experiences more so than external sources. They tend to respect those with clear and consistent opinions. To those who lead with Ti, their own understanding of the subject is more true than that of the public consensus, which can be twisted in both a positive and a negative way. They usually have their own idea of what is considered quality.

Fi (Introverted Emotion) is also an introverted and rational IM. Fi is adept at understanding “distance” between people, closeness, and general interpersonal relationships. It’s also concerned with moral satisfaction, empathy, decency and kindness. Much like Ti, those qualities can be twisted into a both positive and negative way. Those who lead with Fi as their dominant function will refer to things they dislike and like often in realation to themselves- “I don’t like it” as opposed to “It’s not good”. This stamps from the fact that Fi is often concerned more about themselves or how others relate to them in regards to a certain subject than the actual subject.

Si (Introverted Sensing) is an introverted irrational IM. Si is the ability to internalize sensations and to fully realize them. As a perceiving IM it is primarily concerned with tangible and external connections happening at the same time, or more specifically, the sensual interactions between objects. This leads to an understanding of how objects can affect other objects, in ways such as temperature, dirtiness and more. Those who lead with Si have an awareness of health and physical environment. It is also concerned with aesthetics, pleasure, and convenience. Those who lead with Si are usually not very goal oriented, preferring to do fun activities instead.

Ni (Introverted Intuition) is an introverted irrational IM. Ni is associated with the ability to see and understand how events and processes unfold over time, having a vision of the past and future, having strong mental imagery and seeing the connections that are beneath the surface rather than those that are apparent (like you would see with Si types). Those who lead with Ni like to always have a specific plan in mind and an idea of how their life would look in the future. Because of that they have little time for the concept of living in the moment and usually engage in leisure activities for short periods of time, and even when they do, it usually involves some competitive or psychologically demanding aspect in it.

Te (Extroverted Logic) is an extroverted rational IM. Te deals with the external state of objects- how, what, where and when. It is also concerned heavily with work. Types who lead with Te usually deal with factual information a lot and determine what is happening based on objective rational and facts and the functionality is happening rather than the why and how it is happening. Unlike Ti types they judge the quality of something based on what it sets out to do rather than their own personal standards. Those who lead with Te usually consider someone successful if it achieves what it was supposed to without wasting unnecessary energy. They tend to heavily rely on external sources of information to evaluate situations.

Fe (Extroverted Feeling) is an extroverted rational IM. Fe is associated with the ability to recognize, express and understand emotions, passions, excitement, etc. It is also associated with the ability to get emotionally involved in an activity and to form a sense of community and group unity. Those who lead with Fe generally prefer groups with a light atmosphere where anything can be said without fear of being judged upon. They tend to take jokes lightly. They tend to have a great understanding of how something is being said affects the listener's attention. Those who prefer Fe tend to find it hard to hold grudges and may be very forgiving.

Se (Extroverted Sensing) is an extroverted irrational IM. Se is generally the ability to understand how much power, force, or influence is required for an action. Those who value Se are often quick to act and are comfortable with actions that have immediate consequences. Those who lead with Se are usually very competitive and can be rather intense (as opposed to those who lead with Si). Furthermore, Se can be very adept at reaching their object of desire. Those who lead with Se tend to push and influence others into a state where their object of interest can be achieved and tend to not consider other possibilities which may distract them from that object.

Ne (Extroverted Intuition) is an extroverted irrational IM. Ne is associated with the ability to recognize possibilities, create opportunities, and to begin things. Those who value Ne can easily recognize talent and potential of things that have yet to happen. They are also adept at understanding and exploring unrealized possibilities. Those who lead with Ne have an easy time seeing things from other perspectives. They tend to have great intellectual curiosity. They also tend to want and try out possibilities rather than consider them in their mind. They tend to pick a few options and stick with them. Those who lead with Ne can also be very interested in bizarre and outlandish ideas and tend to have a seemingly random sense of humour at times.

a. vs. MBTI

MBTI generally analyzes the human personality and behavior as it is. However, Socionics observes things like a person's political & philosophical ideologies, motivations, inclinations, and role in society on top of their personality and behavior.

MBTI is the way you function and Socionics is the way you externalize functioning or the way you are perceived.

- MBTI has more of a focus on inner cognition as opposed to its external manifestations and inter-type relations
- MBTI only describes usage of 4 functions (aside from add-ons that have been inspired by Socionics), but Socionics describes usage of 8 functions by every individual
- MBTI treats types as individual labels, and implies that similarity between types is essentially found through the difference in the four-letter label (for instance, ENFP and ENTP would be equidistant to ENTP and INTP). In Socionics, there are a large variety of groups that instead dictate similarity, even between types that are otherwise dissimilar and even opposite to one another

Also Socionics has subtypes ; MBTI doesn't

Ni (by Bojangoe): The world is made up of an ever-expanding chain reaction. Everything exists within a dynamic flow. Nothing simply “is” or just “happens,” there is an underlying cause and effect to every action, every interaction, and every event. Ni is the ability to see these causes and effects. Ni gives the user an abstracted and reflective state of mind; seeing the core of an object or event, hidden meanings can be spotted with ease. Imagination is perhaps one of Ni’s greatest strengths, merging oneself in the flow of reality to see what once was and what will be. The imaginative capabilities of this element give the user strong novelistic tendencies, spending great deals of time constructing characters, events, and realities.

Si: Evaluation of how objects interact in the form of sensation; how the conditions of one object reflects onto another - namely themselves. Being defined by their focus on environment and subjective experience, the individual of this type is quite in tune with their surroundings. Examining the relationship between one’s climate and one’s comfort is their speciality. They see the dynamic and ever-changing nature of their environment, how one factor could alter one’s entire experience. It’s because of this that they’re masters of changing their surroundings to suit the needs of themselves and others. They have felt many sensations throughout their lives, they know which are desirable and which are undesirable, they use this knowledge to the benefit of those who appreciate their sensational erudition.

By Bojangoe:

Se PoLR - Si HA: turned away and exhausted by volitional and aggressive people and environments. Desires an environment free of pressure, where health and comfort are a priority and where they can relax

Ne PoLR - Ni HA: despises uncertainty with a passion, hates being in unpredictable situations and unforeseen mishaps, new and unconventional ideas only create more uncertainty thus increasing their anxiety. Yearns to know what the future holds, what will become of them given their current course of action and whether it should be changed for a better outcome.

Ni PoLR - Ne HA: finds introspection and foresight to be unbearably boring, if not useless. Remaining in tune with time causes stress, cannot stay on schedule without a rigid routine. Longs for what is new and exciting, wants to break away from routine and do something fun and spontaneous.

Te PoLR - Ti HA: can’t stand overly pragmatic and efficient methods and results. Hates when ideal outcomes are put aside in favor of what is most practical. Yearns for results and concepts that conform to an ideal and that are structurally coherent. Admires those who are unwavering in their ideals.

Ti PoLR - Te HA: hates overly structured and rigid concepts, cannot stand when the most efficient solution is ignored on favor of what is most ideal. Wants to make progress in an efficient and effective manner, yearns to know in order to make the best out of their work.

Fe PoLR - Fi HA: hates theatrical and dramatic displays, cannot stand fake emotions and false sentiments and relations. Highly unconfident in their feelings and expressions. Yearns for close and meaningful relationships, to be seen and heard. Longs for mutual respect, trust, understanding, and admiration.

Fi PoLR - Fe HA: hates sentimentality and seriousness, dislikes voicing their personal feelings on any subject. Finds close and intimate situations smothering. Wants a fun and expressive environment, lighthearted and unserious, loud and full of laughing and jokes.

  1. My way of describing each of the information elements for those of you who are new to Socionics:
    By @kipjdgammer on PDB
  2. Sensing
:socio_Si: Si in Socionics is focused on comfort, aesthetics, and harmony in the environment. Si-valuing types want to maintain their environment and avoid conflict with other people. It is a conservative approach to the physical world. Imagine Bob Ross and you've got a pretty good idea of what an Si-base type is like. :socio_Se: Se in Socionics on the other hand, takes an expansive approach to the physical world. It is focused on enforcing it's will on the environment, not afraid to step on a few toes to get what it wants. Se-ego types are very territorial, and desire to expand their territory. Their territory could be anything as simple as their favorite coffee mug or something as big as being the CEO of their company and unwilling to give up an inch of control. Se focuses on how much power or influence or leverage an individual, or group, or object, has, and how they can use their own power/influence/leverage to get what they want. Picture Alexander the Great and you've got a pretty good idea of what an Se-base type is like.
  3. Intuition
:socio_Ne: Ne in Socionics is pretty similar to Ne in MBTI. It sees an object or person (mainly when blocked with Fi) or idea, and then looks at all of the future potential of that object/person/idea. For Ne-base types, the fun is in exploring the idea rather than in trying to bring the idea to reality. This doesn't mean Ne base types don't bring their ideas to reality, however they do it because that is part of exploring the idea, not because they feel a need to do it IRL. Ne takes an expansive approach to future ideas. Picture Leonardo da Vinci. :socio_Ni: Ni in Socionics takes a conservative approach to future ideas, choosing narrow things down to focus on one possibility, and then bring that possibility into reality. While Ni in MBTI mainly focuses on the future, Ni in Socionics looks at the past, and extrapolates past trends into the future, looking at how one event leads to another based on cause and effect. I often think of Ni as the "cause and effect" IM because I think that is what best encapsulates this IM. This doesn't necessarily mean that Ni-base types always have a long-term goal, eg. Stephen King is an ILI and he doesn't have a long-term goal, he just keep cranking out books like there's no tomorrow, but it does mean that they focus heavily on how one thing leads to another in both the past and the future. I have a comment on Stephen King's profile about how I think that impacts his writing if you're interested.
  4. Logic
:socio_Ti: Ti is essentially focused on the static logical relationship between objects. How does one thing relate to another and how does it differ? It is focused on classifying/categorizing objects and ideas, creating systems, and associated with a clear and systematic understanding of a situation, idea, ideology, etc. High Ti users tend to be quite ideological, especially the Ti-base types. Ti users prefer to organize their ideas or environment clearly and consistently. What comes to my mind is Napoleon's (SLE, so Ti creative) description of how he has compartments in his head and when he needs to change tasks he just closes one and opens up another, and is able to open up these compartments to get whatever he needs for a specific situation and then close it when he doesn't need it anymore. This is why Ti is referred to as structural logic. Note that since Napoleon was an SLE and had Te demonstrative this description is also influenced by Te's natural pragmatism and isn't a pure representation of Ti. :socio_Te: Te is focused on collecting facts, information, data, statistics, etc. to determine what to do with it and how it can be useful to achieving a specific goal. While Ti is structural, Te is pragmatic, doing whatever works and using whatever information is on hand in order to do what needs to be done. When solving a multitude of problems, Ti is systematic in approaching all the problems cohesively, eg. trying to overturn and create a new political system, while Te is more ad hoc, trying to pragmatically solve each individual issue on it's own. It takes in information dynamically without systematizing it, and uses that information to achieve a goal in the most efficient manner possible.
  5. Ethics
:socio_Fi: Fi is focused on the static ethical relationship between individuals. "Who is this person at their core and do I like them or dislike them?" They judge people's character and decide if they want to associate with that person. Strong Fi types also have an understanding of the other person's subjective attitude toward them, whether they can be trusted or not, and are good at inspiring loyalty in others. Other types, including Fi-blind xLE's can also inspire loyalty, but that is specifically loyalty to an idea or system, whereas ESI's like Nixon or SEE's like Caesar are able to make others loyal to them as a person without needing a higher ideal, even if many today (and many at the time) would view both Nixon and Caesar as morally reprehensible. :socio_Fe: Lastly, Fe is focused on the dynamic, moment-to-moment emotional atmosphere. "How do I feel? How does everyone around me feel? Why do we feel that way?" Fe-base types like to create an emotional atmosphere that suits their preferences and are very good at it. They are attuned to how they can make other people feel the way they want them to feel and also seek to feel things themselves passionately and intensely as well. Unlike in MBTI, Fe is not an inherently selfless function. Fe-users don't necessarily seek other people's approval or seek to help people. Instead, they will use other people's emotions as a tool to get what they want, however selfish or selfless their goal is. Fe in Socionics is not necessarily always oriented toward other people, often manifesting in a need for authentic expression of a person's internal emotions.
